The Role of Lake Associations
A lake association provides a sense of community and can play a vital role in developing a stewardship program. Common interests and goals can be voiced and appropriate actions can be taken to achieve them. Associations link residents together on the basis of the same overall goal - the betterment of their lake.
How to Form a Lake Association
The Federation of Ontario Cottager's Associations (FOCA) can provide information on how to form your own lake association . They can tell you what you will need to begin and what the first priorities are after you have found a strong volunteer base. They can also provide guidance on how to find and retain members, membership dues and volunteer appreciation.
The Washington State Department of Ecology is also a great starting point for forming a lake association . This website lists why a lake association would benefit your lake community, where to start, and how to prepare for the first meeting. It also provides ideas for association projects.
